Hello hello, It can be pin pointed to the month of September 1990. As my father slept on the couch across from me, I sat under headphones and for the first time I heard "Some Friendly", the debut recording by tonight's featured artist. I was hooked. Since then, they've released 5 other long play recordings, and are about to release their 7th album, 'Wonderland' on September 10th. Considered part of the Manchester House scene of the early 90's, a label they've always shied away from, The Charlatans (UK) have always carried a heavy Hammond organ sound....until now. On this new release, they've changed their sound around a bit. The lead singer, Tim Burgess has lived in Los Angeles for three years now, and the "sunshine and love" has apparently grabbed a hold of him. He now sings with a brisk falsetto to show that not only is he a great lyricist, but a ranged singer as well. It also proves that he may be a big fan of Beck. Anyone out there that has seen him live can attest, Tim has the stage presence of the best of them, including Beck. I've showcased several bands on this show in the past, and I've always wanted to give tribute to an overlooked band that has stood the test of their time. Nothing will keep them down....even a band member was imprisoned and then later killed in a car crash. Then in 1998, their ex-accountant stole 500,000 pounds from them. (He's now serving time for it.) Their signature organ sound may be close to gone, but their new recording, like their others before is nothing short of fantastic. I own almost every song by this band, so tonight's show is 3 hours long and dedicated to The Charlatans (UK). Some of my favorites, from one of my favorite bands ever. Music For Listeners 07/28/01 A Show of Charlatans. All music by The Charlatans (UK) 1)"109 pt 2" From the CD 'Some Friendly'. "I heard you whisper...OH". 3)"Forever" From the vinyl LP 'Us and Us Only'. 4)"You're So Pretty, We're So Pretty" First song from the about to be released CD 'Wonderland'. Produced by Steve Hillage. 7)"Feeling Holy" From the self-titled CD 'The Charlatans'. 8)"Over Rising" One of their best singles. Used to be a single only release. Now it can be found on their best of compilation 'Melting Pot'. 9)"Subtitle" Original mix found on the ultra-rare UK CD single for "Me In Time". Flood mix can be found on the CD 'Between 10th and 11th'. 10)"Indian Rope" Their very first single. Ultra rare now. 11)"Good Witch, Bad Witch 1" Played from the vinyl LP 'Us and Us Only'. Rob Collins (keyboards) at his best!!!! 17)"Time For Livin'" Great song only found on the HELP benefit compilation for WAR CHILD. 18)"Come In Number 21" From the CD 'Up to Our Hips'. This seems to be a lot of peoples favorite Charlatans song. It's a good one, and it's produced by Steve Hillage!!! 19)"I Don't Care Where You Live" From the vinyl LP 'Us and Us Only'. 20)"Here Comes A Soul Saver" From the CD "The Charlatans". Features a riff from one of the best Pink Floyd songs, "Fearless". A tribute of sorts to the Floyd. 21)"Title Fight" B-side from the "How High" single. Also on the U.S. version of the CD "Tellin' Stories". 22)"I Can't Even Be Bothered" From the CD 'Between 10th and 11th'. 23)"Opportunity" From the CD 'Some Friendly'. 24)"And If I Fall" From the new CD 'Wonderland'. 25)"Stir It Up" AMAZING B-side found on the "Jesus Hairdo" UK CD single 1. 26)"Green Flashing Eyes" B-side from the UK CD single for "Crashing In". 27)"When Your Ship Comes In" B-side found on the "Forever" UK CD single 1. 28)"You Can Talk to Me" Second version of the b-side found on "The Only One I Know" CD single. Original version on the "Indian Rope" UK CD single. 29)"Theme From Wish" B-side found on the ultra-rare "Weirdo" UK CD single. A theme for a movie that was never made. Good song. 30)"Only a Boho" B-side found on the UK CD single for "I Never Want An Easy Life if Me and He We're Ever To Get There". Maybe my favorite b-side from the band. 31)"Senses" Bluesy track from the vinyl LP 'Us and Us Only'. A Led Zeppelin tribute of sorts. 32)"Up to Our Hips" From the CD 'Up to Our Hips'. Possibly the best song ever made. Well....my favorite from the band at least. I never get sick of this song. 33)"Only Teethin'" From the CD 'Tellin' Stories'. Possibly the best song ever made. Well....my favorite on that CD. 34)"Bullet Comes" Single from the CD 'The Charlatans'. 35)"A Man Needs To Be Told" From the new CD 'Wonderland'. 36)"Another Rider Up In Flames" From the CD 'Up to Our Hips'. Out to Orly...this is one of his favorites from the Charlatanos. 37)"Good Witch, Bad Witch 2" Played from the vinyl LP 'Us and Us Only'. Not found on the U.S. release. HOWEVER "Good Witch, Bad Witch 3 is not found on the UK version, only on the Japan and U.S. versions of the release. The Japanese version has all three parts. I hate that. 38)"You Got It, I Want It" B-side from the second UK CD single for "Impossible". 39)"Tell Everyone" From the CD 'The Charlatans'. 40)"You're A Big Girl Now" From the CD 'Tellin' Stories'. 41)"Sproston Green" From the CD 'Some Friendly'. This song has ended every Charlatans concert since it was written in 1990. The organ riffs in this song are a tribute to "We Won't Get Fooled Again", by The Who. If any Charlatans song is considered a classic, this one would be it. Geez, there were so many other songs that I wish I had time to play. Running time was 3 hours and 15 minutes. No 3 A.M. recording tonight, as it was a special edition of the show. Thanks for reading and/or listening. Thank you friends and family! Peace and hugs, Michael This show is dedicated to Rob Collins (1963-1996). He died in a car crash while foolishly driving drunk. He was one of the greatest keyboardist ever. I sadly did not get to see him play live. He was the original keyboardist for The Charlatans. R.I.P. mate.
