Recording". "Okay man" In 1991 I watched a lot of MTV. I discovered a lot of bands in 1991 from 120 Minutes in particular. Like most of you out there, I would sometimes change the channel when some crappy video came on. I did that almost every time I saw a video from tonight's 3 A.M. artist. In a way, I think the band would have wanted me to change the channel in disgust. Little did I know what was REALLY going on. In the middle of 1992, right before I got into the Orb, I heard an album called "Chill Out". I was floored. This can't be the same band? Isn't that band R&B? Aren't they black??? Why would they make a great ambient recording, and turn around and make a crap recording? "Chill Out" is presently in my top 10 most influential albums of all time, and in retrospect, tonight's recording taught me a thing or two about the music business, and deserves respect not only for being just as creative, but just as crafty. Turns out that they are not black, but Scottish, and some of the songs (the singles basically) in tonight's recording were recorded before 1991 with serious tripped out atmospheres and no lyrics. "Pure Trance Originals" as they were called. In a effort to make music that would make loads and loads of money, and to prove a point that they could easily rehash the popular music of the dance scene....Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond hired a bunch of rappers and groove masters to help them remix, recompile, and recalculate the tunes to come up with a party spirited and well produced album that garnered four #1 hit's WORLDWIDE. Everybody was fooled!! Even me!!! In 1991 their 12" singles even out-sold Madonna's and Depeche Mode's singles. (After they're first number 1 single under the guise, The Timelords, they even put out a book entitled "How to Make a Number One the Easy Way".) The singles on the recording are good, but what really shines are the album cuts that no one really listened to. They are one of my favorite bands ever, and one of the best punk, (yes punk) bands ever!! Even though they only released one punk song, they are just the trickster's that the music business needed to shake it up. I don't have enough time to go on about how great this band is....and I'll save others pieces of information for when I decide to dedicate a show to them. (Which will eventually happen.) In 1992, they left the music business and deleted all of their back catalogue. Now you can find almost all of their music on the internet, and they like it they way. They are true artists, true musicians and true to the trail. Tonight in it's entirety I gladly present the UK version of 'The White Room (JAMs CD 6)' by The KLF. It's a little different than the "remixed" U.S. version of the album. Plus unlike the U.S version, the whole first side is live......(Hee hee).....not really, but they wanted you to think it was. They just sampled crowd noise from The Doors Live album, the unreleased Haircut 100 live album, and U2's 'Rattle and Hum' to make it sound live. AWESOME STUFF!!!! "They're justified and they're ancient and like to roam the land. They're justified and they're ancient, I hope you understand. They don't want to upset the apple cart, and they don't want to cause any harm, but if you don't like what they're going to do. You better not stop them 'cause they're coming through". Peace and hugs to all, Michael Here's some tour dates for you Texas dwellers. If you're a non-Texas dwellers, take note that these bands are out there playing the states. Travis is playing Stubb's in Austin 10/17/01 I missed last year's date as I was in San Diego. I won't be missing this one. and........NICK CAVE and the Bad Seeds will be playing Stubb's the week prior on the 9th of October. They are explosive live. I've only seen the live video, but I am going to try my hardest to be there.
