Recording" Tonight's album was one of the first albums that made me notice the power of sound effects in music. One time when I was quite young, I was listening to tonight's recording, and at one point in the fourth song a siren blares through the speakers. My Grandmother Thomas shouted out..."Oh my God, it's that the police?" No it wasn't Sting and the guys, or the cops. It was the Electric Light Orchestra. They made many great albums, but tonight would have to be the one that I listened to the most. I was 4 when this album came out in 1976. Thanks to my father, I would have to say that I heard this album new. As always, it's being played tonight as it has shaped my musical lifetime. This album in particular not only made me notice the use of sound effects, (I have to give Pink Floyd that credit as well.), but it also showed me the extreme influences that a rock and roll band can have. Everything from orchestral arrangements to The Beatles, to even Opera. I didn't know way back when, that Jeff Lynne was a huge Beatles fan. Now it's so incredibly obvious. Since then, he became the newest Beatle when he co-wrote and co-produced the two new songs for the Beatles Anthology. I guess Paul, Ringo, and George were big E.L.O. fans as well. From a great import vinyl copy I found 4 years ago for a dollar, here it is in it's entirety....'A New World Record'. Produced, arranged, written, and sung by Jeff Lynne. Performed by Electric Light Orchestra. "Now listen here baby, she said to me. Just meet me at the opera house at quarter to three. Cos I'm ready, yea, yea, yea, I'm ready. Woo hoo hoo I'm ready, I'm going to show you how to sing the blues." Peace and hugs hugs hugs, Michael
