Good day readers, One thing that doing the show this week taught me, is that life will go on. I forgot a lot of the events of the last week just for a few moments, as I purged my mind and soul with some of the greatest music I've ever heard. I try to do this each and every week while I'm playing music for the people of San Antonio. I'm glad I live in America. I'm glad that I have the opportunity to play music. Plus, it's the music I want people hear. This is the music that has changed my life, so that makes it extra special. I wouldn't do it otherwise. That said, I couldn't think what to play during this first show after the attacks, and it became apparent when I realized that since last Tuesday, I've listened to the band XTC a lot. The words of Andy Partridge and Colin Mouldling have, under the circumstances, made me as happy as I could possibly be this week. Their lyrics have always made me realize that there are people in the world who believe that peace is the only way to thrive. Like me, they are pacifists, and wish for a better world in our future. They sometimes are bleak and cynical with their words, but they are always honest in their feelings. This weeks show features the music of XTC. A virtually unknown band that started in a small town of Swindon, England in 1976. They still go on strong. They are one of the best bands I've ever heard, and their music is timeless. Every time I bought an XTC album that I never heard before, I was amazed by the timeless quality their music possessed. For instance, when I bought 'Black Sea' on vinyl for a dollar in 1998, I was amazed that it was released in 1980. It sounded like it could have been made last week. I've wanted to do a show of their music for weeks and weeks, and now is the time, as I can't think of anyone else's music that fits my frame of mind this week. This show is dedicated to every person on the planet, as we are all Earthlings, and we need to learn to live on it's face with peace and love. Music For Listeners 09/15/01 XTC XTC XTC All music by XTC except where noted. 1)Chomsky-"Rollers" From the CD 'Onward Quirky Solders'. I know, I said XTC, but this is the most XTC influenced song that Chomsky has made so far. I played it because, I listened to the this song more than any other during the week. It's about understanding and living with different creeds, religions, and sexualities. Sean, this song is now a classic in my eyes. It says so much about our world and a good way of living in it. Thank you for writing such a beautiful song. "I'm only just trying to make it through". 2)"John Peel Intro" From CD one of 'Transistor Blast: The Best of the BBC Sessions'. The first XTC box set. 3)"Towers of London" From the CD 'Black Sea'. 4)"Life Begins at the Hop (BBC Session)" From the CD one of 'Transistor Blast: The Best of the BBC Sessions'. 5)"This World Over" From the vinyl LP 'The Big Express'. 6)"The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" From the CD 'Nonsvch (Nonsuch)' 7)"Hold Me My Daddy" From the CD 'Oranges and Lemons'. 8)"Jason and the Argonauts" From the CD 'English Settelment'. 9)"I'd Like That" From the CD 'Apple Venus Volume One'. 10)"Heaven is Paved With Broken Glass" From the CD 'Rag & Bone Buffet:Rare Cuts & Leftovers'. 11)"You and Clouds Will Still Be Beautiful (Demo)" From the CD 'Homegrown: Wasp Star Home Demos'. 12)"Melt the Guns" From the CD 'English Settlement'. 13)"Ballet For a Rainy Day" From the vinyl LP 'Skylarking'. 14)"1000 Umbrellas" From the vinyl LP 'Skylarking'. 15)"Living Through Another Cuba" From the CD 'Black Sea'. 16)"A New Town Animal In a Furnished Cage" From their first vinyl LP 'White Music'. 17)"Another Satellite (BBC Session)" From CD one of 'Transistor Blast: The Best of the BBC Sessions'. 18)"Beating of Hearts" From the vinyl LP 'Mummer'. 19)"Poor Skeleton Steps Out" From the CD 'Oranges and Lemons'. 20)"Battery Brides" From the vinyl LP 'Go 2'. 21)"Boarded Up" From the CD 'Wasp Star: Apple Venus Volume Two'. 22)The Colonel-"I Need Protection" From the XTC CD 'Rag & Bone Buffet:Rare Cuts & Leftovers'. Not really an XTC song though. This is a side project of Colin Mouldling done in 1980. He just needed some time away it seems. 23)"My Bird Performs" From the CD 'Nonsvch (Nonsuch)' 24)"Statue of Liberty" From the vinyl LP 'White Music'. Their second single. 25)"Senses Working Overtime" From the CD 'English Settlement'. Most likely the first XTC song I heard way back in 1983. 26)"Burning With Optimism's Flame" From the CD 'Black Sea'. 27)"Dear God" From the vinyl LP 'Skylarking'. The first big hit in America. Andy didn't think this was one of his better songs. It wasn't even put on the first pressing of 'Skylarking' in the U.S. 28)"One of the Millions" From the CD 'Oranges and Lemons'. 29)"Extrovert" From the XTC CD 'Rag & Bone Buffet:Rare Cuts & Leftovers'. B-side of "Grass" in the UK. 30)"Your Dictionary" From the CD 'Apple Venus Volume One'. 31)"Earn Enough For Us" From the vinyl LP 'Skylarking'. 32)"Leisure" From the CD 'English Settlement'. 33)"Making Plans for Nigel" From the vinyl LP 'Drums and Wires'. Their first big hit in England. 34)"Respectable Street" From the CD 'Black Sea'. 35)"Here Comes President Kill Again" From the vinyl LP 'Oranges and Lemons'. 36)"Down In the Cockpit" From the 2 X vinyl LP 'English Settlement'. 37)"Playground" From the CD 'Wasp Star: Apple Venus Volume Two'. 38)"Church of Women (Demo)" From the CD 'Homegrown: Wasp Star Home Demos'. 39)"No Language In Our Lungs" From the CD 'Black Sea'. Possibly the best lyrics of any XTC song. That's saying a lot. 40)"Punch and Judy" From the CD 'Rag & Bone Buffet:Rare Cuts & Leftovers'. Originally a B-side on the "Ball and Chain" 12 inch single. 41)"Dame Fortune (Demo)" Unreleased song. Plucked from a CD that an fellow XTC fan burned from me. Great song...hopefully will be made available on the next XTC record. 42)"Love at First Sight" From the CD 'Black Sea'. 43)"Snowman" From the CD 'English Settlement'. Anyone that has heard this song likes it. It's so well put together. 44)Chomsky-"Up" From the CD 'Onward Quirky Solders'. A song about being alright "up against it". Needed to be played as well. If you're curious to see the lyrics to these songs then go here: http://website.lineone.net/~ssleightholm/dict/lyrics/lyricst.htm I think all the songs I played are on there. There is also a really good book called XTC: Songs and Stories. It's co-written by the band, and is a song by song account of every song they've made thus far. It let's you know a lot about these lyrics and how the songs were recorded. I wish every band would put out a book like that. Peace to you all. Take care of yourself. Michael recorded and available
