Greetings fellow readers..... This week, yet another great list of songs. You should have listened. If you did, then congrats....we made it through another 3 hours of.... Music For Listeners 11/03/01 1)Primal Scream-"Come Together (Andrew Weatherall Mix)" From the import version of the great album "Screamadelica". 2)Rocker's Hi-Fi-"Now I Deliver" From the CD 'Mish Mash'. 3)U2-"Spanish Eyes" From the 12" single for "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". 4)Chomsky-"Straight Razor" & "Destination" & "Laughing" From the CD 'Onward Quirky Solders'. I really didn't want to play "Destination", as I played it last week, but my mess up just made a triple shot out of it. "Laughing" was also played for Chief Blue Meanie.....the nicest meanie I know. 5)Apollo XI-"Peace in the Middle East (Sea Of Tranquility Mix)" "Orb"sonic approved...and released back in 91' during Desert Storm, but it still rings true today unfortunately. 6)Pato Banton-"Beams of Light (Depths of an Ocean Lovemix) Orb mix from the Orb remix Project CD 'Excursions Beyond The Call Of Duty Part 2'. 7)(The London) Suede-"Daddy's Speeding" From the CD 'Dog Man Star'. 8)Track Star-"These Horses Carry Blood" From the CD 'Communication Breaks'. 9)Superchunk-"Late-Century Dream" From the CD 'Here's to Shutting Up'. 10)New Order-"Rock the Shack" From the brand new CD 'Get Ready'. Features Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream on vocals. 11)Never Loved Elvis-"Rodney Smart" Unreleased track from the Australian band. Do a search for the band on the web and you can download this song for free. Very catchy stuff. I found this band on a message board, and the sole member of the band gave me the link to get it. You heard it here first...for sure. 12)Smog-"Hit the Ground Running" From the vinyl LP 'Knock Knock'. 13)The Strokes-"The Modern Age" From the CD 'Is This It?' 14)James-"Don't Wait That Long" From the vinyl LP 'Seven'. Tim Booth of James has given notice that he is quitting the band James. This pretty much means that after 20 years, the band James is no more. I'll keep you posted, but James without Tim wouldn't be the same. I don't think they will go on. 15)The Fireman-"Fluid (Out of Body with Sitar Mix)" Found only on the rare rare rare 12" single for the song "Fluid". Did I mention that this was rare? Limited to 5000 copies. Paul McCartney and Youth....how can you go wrong. 16)Celtic Cross-"Hicksville" Title track from the CD 'Hicksville'. This band features Youth, Simon Postford, and Saul Davies from James. This song features a cool sample from William S. Burroughs. 17)Pink Floyd-"Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (Live)" From the vinyl LP 'Ummagumma'. Studio version of this song will be on the new 'Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd'. 18)Aphex Twin-"Bbydhyonchord" From the brand new CD 'Druqks'. Yet again....that is not a mis-spelling, it's Richard D. James' being weird again. 19)"The 3 A.M. Recording". I would have to say that ambient records are certainly the back bone of the electronic music I listen to. Sometimes nothing will do but a good ol' fashioned slow and beautiful recording to take your mind off of the day. Tonight's recording is certainly a classic ambient recording. Please don't get confused, tonight's album is by "Air". This is not the more popular French band of the same name, but a German version that consists of one musical genius.....Pete Namlook. Incredibly prolific and talented, he has forged his label, FAX records, into one of the most respected music labels of the electronic realm. With FAX, he releases a great number of recordings each year, several with him as the writer and performer. To keep costs down, most of these releases are limited edition pressings consisting of only 1000-5000 copies. (Only about 3000 copies exist of tonight's recording.) So far there have been 4 albums released by Namlook under the name "Air", starting with "Air I" in December of 1993. Just four months later, in March of 94', he released the second album of this series. All four of these records are excellent, but I would have to put down this second "Air" release as "my most listened to" CD of the series. Each album does have a middle eastern flare that never fails to set the atmosphere of standing in a desert wind. Namlook also takes a world music approach by melding these Arabic musical patterns with his French and German influences. These together, make up a unique flavor of sounds and textures. "Air II" in particular also consists of several samples from David Lynch's "Dune". This even further enhances the mood of standing in the middle of vast hills of sand. Deserted, but not dead.......this music is very much alive and shimmering. Turn down the lights and put the kettle on, here is 'Air 2 - "Traveling Without Moving Trip 1-11"' in it's entirety. "Soon we'll being to fold space."
