Recording" The first time I saw Banco de Gaia was in Austin, I do believe in 1995. Composer, Toby Marks played by himself with just a huge mixing board and a big rack of sequencers. Even though it was just one guy twiddling knobs and what not, it was still one of the most intriguing concerts I have ever seen. When I saw him again in Dallas a couple of years later, he topped it by hiring a full acoustic band consisting of three saxophones players, two drummers, a bassist, and a guitarist. Toby himself played the electronic bits with keyboards, sequencers, and a guitar over that for a much denser sound. Toby is in my book, is a guy that does it right. For a start, his main electronic influences are Pink Floyd, The Orb, and the Eno brothers. This Englishman then skillfully blends these influences with his great passion of the music from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia and something magical appears. Out of this magic comes his signature sound that Toby composes under the guise of Banco de Gaia. (F.Y.I. Banco is of course "Bank", and Gaia is derived from (the goddess of the) "Earth") Toby tries to make music for the masses, and like his influences mentioned before, most of his work could be considered abstract art pieces. He has uplifting and colorful songs that often make you want to dance...and sometimes he likes to take the more subtle and relaxing approach to, in turn, make you want to get a massage. Another trait lifted from the influences above is that with massive lighting effects, and a great sounding PA system, he can throw on a great live performance. Which seems to be even harder for an electronically based group to do...yet alone one person. Like I said.......he does it right. His musical presence isn't extremely well known, but it should be. So, if you're sick of your Enigma and Enya records, and are looking to branch out.....I would start with this well crafted ambient-dub project. Presently, Banco de Gaia has 5 albums of soaring melodies and tribal rhythms, however...tonight I'm playing the second and arguably, the best CD in Toby's catalog. Banco de Gaia-"Last Train to Lhasa" "My future is in China". Peace and hugs, Michael This show was recorded.
