Good afternoon fellow readers. I would like to use this opportunity to give props to a band that needs to be heard more. If any of you out there like good pop music, (and I know you do), on the Kinks/Beach Boys/Big Star tip, then please go buy the album 'Oh, Inverted World', by The Shins. You will not be disappointed. Now after that extra publicity here's some more publicity for the music that I love.... Music For Listeners 01/19/02 1)The JAMs-"It's Grim Up North (Part One)" From the UK CD single (JAMS 028CD) for "It's Grim Up North". Produced by the KLF for KLF Communications. heh heh. Very rare indeed. 2)The Orb-"Bang'er N' Chips" From the CD "Pomme Fritz:The Orb's Little Album'. 3)Massive Attack featuring Caroline Revell-"Home of the Whale" From the Virgin Records CD compilation 'Signed Sealed Delivered'. 4)Massive Attack vs. The Mad Professor-"Moving Dub (Better Things)" From the CD 'No Protection'. I like the mix on the album 'Protection' a little more, but.....this track still features Tracey Thorne of Everything but the Girl. 5)The Shins-"One by One All Day" From the excellent CD 'Oh, Inverted World'. 6)Catherine Wheel-"Hole" From the CD 'Happy Days'. 7)Adorable-"Sunshine Smile" From the UK CD single for "Sunshine Smile". 8)Poster Children-"Good Cop Bad Cop" From the CD 'New World Record'. 9)Salaryman-"Graze the Umbra" From the CD 'Karoshi (Death from Overwork)'. The last two bands have the same people in both....just a different approach to the music. 10)Chomsky-"Americana" Exclusive track only on the Summer Break Records CD compilation 'Sunny Teriyaki Hamburger Breakfast'. 11)Blur-"Magpie" B-side found on the single for "Girls and Boys". 12)The Strokes-"Take It or Leave It (Live on KCRW)" Live version of an album track found on the "Last Nite" UK CD single. 13)AFX (Aphex Twin)-"Untitled (Track 6)" From the Analogue Bubblebath 3 CD. On vinyl, AB 3 was only 4 untitled songs with one song only available on the vinyl. The CD has 13 untitled tracks with a total of (add 'em up), 10 exclusive tracks. Why this was....we'll never know. 14)James-"P.S." From the CD 'Laid'. 15)Mercury Rev-"The Dark is Rising" From the CD 'All is Dream'. 16)New Fast Automatic Daffodils-"Music" From the CD 'Body Exit Mind'. 17)Pink Floyd-"Pigs on the Wing (Part One) & "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" & "Pigs on the Wing (Part Two)" The three "pig" songs from the CD 'Animals', released twenty-five years ago this past Monday. 18)The Charlatans-"You Got It, I Want It" From the second UK CD single for "Impossible". 19)XTC-"Battery Brides (Live)" From the CD 'BBC One Live in Concert'. Also can be found as part of the Transistor Blast box set. 20)The Verve-"Twilight" B-side easily found on the CD 'No Come Down (B Sides & Outtakes)'. Originally found on the UK CD single for "Blue". 21)The 3 A.M. Recording Many bands come and go. Many stick it out to make better and better records with experience. Looking back, I wasn't a big Orbital fan on their first two records. I liked them, but I didn't think they were special or anything....Just another techno band. Boy was I wrong. In 1994 they released their third album and it went in a slightly different direction than the successors. This new album had very catchy "techno-pop" hooks that you couldn't stop from humming all day long. (I think most of you readers will agree that if you hum a tune even when you're not listening to the song, then you have found some good music.) I will admit that this may not be the best Orbital album, as they've released two better albums since then, but it was the first one that I took a liking to. From the get-go, tonight's recording first sends you into a spacey atmosphere with the long stand-out track "Forever". The album continues to weave in and out of heavy trance lines and trippy grooves, and like always, it features amazing samples to throw another layer into the proverbial techno pie. It's no wonder that they started getting more and more offers for soundtrack work after this album, because this one takes you on a journey. It's a little sad though, that almost all of the songs on this album are not featured in their live sets anymore. Most of them would be great to hear with a bunch of dancing fools, like me. (I've seen Orbital live two times now, and I will go see them whenever they get within a drives reach.) You can't go wrong with the band that has been hailed as "the greatest techno band ever" by many. They may not be "THE BEST", but they sure are up there. They sure know what they are doing. Nice guys too. Grab your Walkman, and a towel, and go out for a sweaty run during this one. Here is Orbital's third album, 'Snivilisation'. "What does God say?" Peace...out Michael Recorded and archived. Unfortunately....some of this recording was messed up. After the James track...the recording becomes dual channel mono. Before the James cut, it's in true stereo. listen in live 1:05 AM-4:00 AM CST Friday nights/Saturday mornings in San Antonio FM 91.7 or world wide at www.krtu.org Music For Listeners web-site: http://hometown.aol.com/orbfile23/myhomepage/index.html MPEG3 of the week site: http://home.satx.rr.com/music4listeners/Mpeg3%20of%20the%20week/
