Recording" March 10th, 1967 Arnold Layne is released. Next week will mark the 35th anniversary one of the most prolific and dynamic rock bands ever to make music. It's no secret, Pink Floyd is my favorite band. I've listened to them all my life. I first saw them live in my teens, so I grasped to them even harder there after. They have a fan base world wide that is as dynamic as their music. Way back in 1984 when CD's were new, the popular CD to test your speakers was always "Dark Side of the Moon". Digitally clear, no pops, no crackles...where's the headphones? I've always considered "Dark Side" as the peak of their musical career, and it certainly put them on the "proverbial" map. However, if you're Pink Floyd, where do you go from your peak? It took two and a half years and for that question to be answered. On September 15th, 1975 the follow up to "Dark Side" was released with much fanfare, but also with mixed reviews. If you walked into the store that day to buy the new album, you would find an album wrapped in black cellophane with a sticker on it. Black, stark...absent. Who knew that when you pulled the album out, there would be a picture of a man shaking another man's hand, who happens to be on fire. The concept on the musical end is a homage to co-founding member Syd Barrett - The ex-member that fell into pop-star despair after their first release. Syd actually showed up out of nowhere during the recording of the album, like a spirit from the past. None of them had seen him in 6 years, and it took a while for some one to notice him. From all nine parts of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" to "Have a Cigar" to the classic self-titled track, it's all good, and it all reflects the absence of Syd. One thing I notice listening to it again is that it only has five songs....I dare a popular modern band to put out a five song album these days. For Pink Floyd, it was to become just another classic, and David Gilmour and Richard Wright even think it's their best album. For me, it's not as good as "Dark Side", but it's a real close third. lol. 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd. The first of five Pink Floyd albums played during this month of March. "The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh, by the way, which one's Pink?"
