Only one link this week: What is the universe made of? Click http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/m_uni/uni_101matter.html to find out. Music For Listeners 03/30/02 "the last of the 20's" 1)Built to Spill-"The Plan (Live)" From the CD 'Live'. 2)The Verve-"This is Music" From the CD 'A Northern Soul'. 3)Chomsky-"World (Demo)" Only was found on the old Chomsky site. Never commercially available. Great song too. 4)Flake Music-"Spanway Hits" From the CD 'When you Land Here, It's Time to Return'. From Albuquerque, New Mexico. With a couple of instrument changes, they disbanded and became The Shins. Again...as much as I look for good music, there is always something out there waiting to be found. I found The Shins before Flake Music, and this excellent CD is almost 5 years old now. The original pressing is quite tough to find, but their is another press in the works since the Shins have a great buzz about them. Speaking of............ 5)The Shins-"Girl Inform Me" From the vinyl LP 'Oh, Inverted World'. I swear the vinyl sounds better than the CD pressing. Shins-mania is sweeping the country....catch it. 6)Flake Music-"Structo" From the CD 'When you Land Here, It's Time to Return'. 7)Ween-"Falling Out" From the CD 'White Pepper'. 8)XTC-"Snowman" From the CD 'English Settlement'. "It isn't even winter but I'm freezing....why oh why does she treat me like a snowman". 9)Radiohead-"Everything is It's Right Place (Live)" Recorded from a download on their website, however I think this is the same version on their live E.P. 'I Might Be Wrong : Live'. 10)U2-"Acrobat" From the CD 'Achtung Baby'. A close friend let me know that this is the only song that U2 has never played live. That's a bad choice....what an amazing song. The last two songs were played for Mr. Walheim. 11)Pat Murray-"The Frame" & "Main Title Theme" & "Variables" & "All at Once" Four tracks from the CD soundtrack to the film, "Ravenswan". A film written and directed by Ross Ruediger. It was just a matter of time....wasn't it? 11)John Navarro and Tucker Allen-"'Echoes in the Past Suite' Part One (Like the Most Normal Thing)" Also from the soundtrack to the film, "Ravenswan", written and directed by Ross Ruediger. :o) Not that I toot my own horn all the time, but I just so happened to have recorded, mixed, and edited the "Echoes in the Past Suite" for the film's soundtrack. I am proud of the fact that I finally get to play something I took part in, as a piece of my own show. Pat Murray receives the well deserved credit for producing, recording, and mixing his excellent score, and what a great score it is!! If you would like a copy of the 'Music from "Ravenswan"', at a deal of just 10 dollars...please send an e-mail to musicforlisteners@hotmail.com and I will send you info on how you can forward your monetary units. The money will help us show our locally produced film to more people in the future. 12)The Orb-"O.O.B.E. (Out Of Body Experience)" From the CD 'U.F. Orb'. Calling Orbgirl....... 13)Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart-"Oh Namah Shiva (Transformation of the Heart Mix)" From the 12" E.P. to "The Sun Does Rise". Mix translation and additional production by Bill Laswell. I always get at least one call every time I play this track. It's intoxicating. 14)Bill Laswell and Jah Wobble-"Alsema Dub" From the CD 'RadioAxiom-A Dub Transmission (Bass: The Final Frontier)'. More great dub work from two of the greatest bass players ever. 15)Dub Trees-"Buffalo" & "Cobalt Waterfall" From the CD 'Nature Never Did Betray the Heart That Loved Her'. 16)The Drum Club-"Spaced Out, Locked In" From the CD 'Everything is Now'. "Even though we're traveling at 23,000 miles an hour, I feel like we're floating." 17)Electric Light Orchestra-"Confusion" From the vinyl LP 'Discovery'. Played for Miss MereHud. 18)"The 3 A.M. Recording" Live albums always get the shaft. "It's good, but the studio album is much better". Usually this stereotype rings true for most recordings, but not for tonight's album. When I was 8 years old, I bought Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' at a music store with my own hands. This album consumed me, even as an eight year old child. It started with "Another Brick in the Wall", of course, but after weeks of listening, it went on much further than just the hit single. With the aid of the terrific album artwork, I began to see the movie of the music in my head, and the film version wouldn't see a release for 2 years yet. When I became a die hard Pink Floyd fan in 1987, (the first time I saw them live), I've began a quest to see The Wall performed as the rock opera it is intended to be heard and seen. When the Berlin wall came down in 89', Roger Waters set out to do another concert of this at the fallen barrier. I wanted to go so badly to Berlin to see this so called re-staging, but in the end, I'm glad I didn't waste my time. Even though it featured an all star cast, musically, it just wasn't the same as the Pink Floyd spectacle. (Maybe because it featured an all star cast, that didn't feature David Gilmour.) It took them 20 years, but finally in the year 2000, the world saw the release of one of the greatest musical events to ever grace a stage. This could personally be the greatest live album ever recorded in hind site, and directly opposing of the stereotype: I believe that this live album is better than the studio version. It's still as fresh and innovative as it was in 1980, and it's un-cut. (Since CD's were not around at that time, a few songs were deleted or edited off of the original release, due to limited vinyl space.) Not only does it sound great for being 20 years old, and not only is it a documentation of great musical theater, but it also documents the last time David Gilmour, Richard Wright, Nick Mason, and Roger Waters ever played on the same stage. That is what personally blows me away the most with this collection of great live songs.....Roger and David playing side by side, like it was yesterday. The 5th and final week in the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Pink Floyd features 'Is There Anybody Out There? - The Wall Live From Earls Court London', all the way through. The live musical spectacular that broke down all the barriers for the stadium rock concerts to follow. "TEAR DOWN THE WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!"
