Hollow'
The Smiths were one of the first bands that really
made me sit up and ask, "Why isn't this on the radio in America?...It's
great music! It's silly, but catchy". I couldn't believe that they
weren't popular in the U.S., and unfortunately, I quickly discovered
that I found them the same week they broke up. This recording was only
originally released in the U.K. and before its CD re-release, it was
really hard to find in the U.S. This album captures their younger days,
when they were so full of raw pep. It features some faster tempo BBC
radio sessions as well as some of their early singles. Peppy or melancholy,
it's full of a thick rawness that no one could have understood at the
time. Now looking back, these raw versions of their early work has stood
the test of time. Everybody that has ever considered The Smiths a "girly"
band, has #1 - never looked deep enough into their music to hear the
amazing melodies and rhythm tracks, and #2 - they have no sense of humor
at all. I still can't listen to the Smiths and not crack a smile, if
not gut laugh at least once. Morrissey is silly, and he wanted his lyrics
to be that way. This one is going out to everyone in their late teens
reading this. Find music that isn't being forced down your throat by
the dreaded MTV and you too will find the gems in the rough. "You're
the bee knees, but so am I". Orly picked this one as it is his
favorite album by this classic Manchester band.
