18) "The Mid-Morning Recording" The
Sundays-'Blind'
I first remember hearing The Sundays upon
the release of their classic first album, when I was working in a record
store situated in a huge mall that now lies empty like a vast ghost
town. I happened to have bought this, their second album, the day it
came out in America, in another record store in that same mall. Now,
it seems strange to think of this music playing over the mall intercom
system while the huge building lies empty. You hear the sound of
an angel, but you're alone in a terribly eerie and spooky place that
reeks of caramel corn and childhood memories. That pretty much describes
this album; it's deep and dark, but at the same time it is fanciful,
light, sweet and full of life's questions. Each of three albums released
by this band deal with different lyrical content, and this album is
their certainly their darkest and most thought provoking. Not really
a carbon-copy of their amazing first album, but the sound was still
familiar to fans of the time, but still different enough to be interesting. This
album also has what could be the best Rolling Stones cover ever made,
and weirdly enough, their cover of "Wild Horses" may even
be their most popular song to date. Similar to the The Smiths,
they had very little output over the lifespan of the band, but so how
sweet and timeless these pieces are. Hopefully this band makes
a return at some point, because if they make more music, that could
only be a good thing. Kate Bush came out of retirement, so one can only
hope that another great female singer makes another angelic appearance.
I'm also so glad to say that I seen this wonderful band play live, and
luckily in my favorite building in the town I was born in: The
Majestic Theater - San Antonio (Click for picture). "And
I liked you for 24 hours in your house, and now the time has come to
live again, I shall."
