31) "The Mid-Morning Recording"           The Monks-'Black Monk Time'
Going through the list of past albums that we've played, I was somewhat stunned that this album hadn't been played before. Some people would say that punk started here with this band. Recorded in 1966, before "punk" was "punk". (I don't know many bands that would shave their heads at that time.) A grinding organ, a banjo almost played like a drum, some crazy lyrics, dressed in black with actual nooses around their neck. All from five G.I.'s who were living in Germany wanted to get out of the army. (Try to track down online the only live footage of the band from the 60's, playing in Germany. Some great stuff.) This one is going out to Aaron Forland, who introduced this band to me in 1999 on our way to Blanco Cafe. I was shocked that it took me 33 years after the album's release to hear it. For me this album ranks up there with the albums by The Modern Lovers, Big Star, and Nick Drake; timeless classics that will never get old and way too overlooked the first time around. Some things are way before their time, and this album is certainly a huge case for that argument. Julian Cope, Jack White, Mark E. Smith all claim this to be one of the most overlooked and seminal recordings ever made. "Pussy galore is coming down and we like it....we don't like the atomic bomb."
