30) "The Mid-Morning Recording"          Chris Bell-'I Am the Cosmos'
Whenever I go to Memphis, I try to make some of the trip about the band Big Star. Last time I visited Memphis, I went to Mortimer's Restaurant and Bar to see the shrine they have to the band. Back in the 70's, the restaurant was owned by Chris Bell's father, but is now owned by his sister. Sadly at age 27, Chris was on his way home from that restaurant, (where he worked as a manager), when the Triumph he was driving crashed into a ulitity pole at the corner of Poplar and Grove Park. His funeral was the next day, December 28th; the birthday of Alex Chilton. It would be another 14 years before the world would hear the masterpiece album that is "I Am the Cosmos". It's too bad that Alex and Chris could never reunite, at least in this world. Ryko releasing this album is pretty much what led me to hear Big Star. I finally heard them the year this album was released. It took me a long time to find that band, and I'm still sad about it. I'm still sad that how this member of the rock and roll 27-club, never got his wonderful music heard, while he was alive. Alex got to reap some of those rewards during his life, but also not entirely. Big Star is still one of the greatest rock and roll bands that never got famous. The greatest indie band of all-time, and this album shows how Chris Bell's influence shined in his work for that band. "Every night I tell myself, I am the cosmos."
31) James-"Sayonara"  From the CD 'Wah-Wah'.
