One of the best character movies EVER made. In my current Top 10 for sure. 23)Fleetwood Mac-"Why?" From the vinyl LP 'Mystery To Me'. 24)"The 3 A.M. Recording" I've played a lot of rock records in this segment lately....so tonight I've decided to change it up a little with one of my favorite techno CD's ever made. Steve Hillage, an amazing guitar player that played with Gong in the 70's, and also did some great ambient LP's of his own in the late 70's said in an interview in 92' that "Now I am finally making the music that I hear in my head". In 1991, he compiled a techno super group of sorts by gathering himself, his wife Miquette Girauldy, Youth, Derrick May, Dr Alex Patterson and Thrash of the Orb, Aniff Cousins, DJ Lewis Keogh, Andy Falconer, Steve Waddington, and stadium DJ Paul Oakenfold to do an album together. What came out was System 7 (or 777 in the US). System 7's first CD is full of soulful grooves, great vocal work, deep feeling basses, ambient soundscapes, and amazing "Gliss" guitar work by Steve himself. This album was the first time I noticed that guitars can fit perfectly into the techno side of things. This was also the first time I noticed how much talent former Orb member Kris Weston (Thrash) really had. His mixing work on this album is incredible. Looking back it seems that the Orb is missing something as of late. Tonight I'm playing the UK version of the first System 7 record, appropriately called "System 7". The US version (777) is really very good as well, but has some different mixes and features less of Youth and Thrash mixing together. For anyone familiar with them...you know that combo has to be a good thing. I think the UK version is just a little better, even though it's missing a superb b-side that was added to the US version. Here is, in my opinion one of the most influential techno albums ever made.........System 7-'System 7' Steve Hillage was once asked if he thought that techno music has no soul. He replied "No, bad music has no soul". "Access my value in dollars and pounds, it won't mean shit when I hit the ground. Mental reconnaissance, a shot in the dark, onward moving the forward march." Peace, hugs, and have a good 4th and all.... Michael T. This show was recorded and is available.
