25) "The Mid-Morning Recording" Laurie Anderson-'United States Live (Part 1)'
Since the recording of Laurie Anderson's seminal work 'United States Live' is turning 40 this year. I thought to play the whole recording as a Mid-Morning Recording, instead of playing it through in a single, four and a half hour show. The original performance these recordings were culled from lasted eight hours, over two nights. The released recordings cut it almost in half, removing pieces that were more visual in content. There has never been a video of these performances, but there is an accompanying book showing pictures of the show, along with all the dialog and lyrics for the songs released on record and tape, and later on CD. One can get more of an idea of this ground breaking "performance art" piece looking through the book, and seeing all the instruments she created and used to perform this piece. This first part of "United States Live" could be my favorite of the four parts. I think that is because it was the first material I really heard by Laurie. I might have heard 'O Superman' before without knowing what it was, but a cassette mix a friend made of some of her favorites from this album influenced me greatly. The engineering, the science, and the technology aspects of her work. Her piquancy in telling a story. "The Language of the Future" was written in the early 80's, and it completely mirrors the aspects of digital culture 40 years later. "Yankee See", "Say Hello", "So, Happy Birthday", "Closed Circuits", "Walk the Dog", and ending part one with one of her more famous songs from the time, "Born, Never Asked". This performance was a showcase for her work after the breakthrough of her album 'Big Science'. This was recorded before the release of her second Warner Bros. album 'Mister Heartbreak'. The recordings of 'United States Live' were released after that album, and before her concert film 'Home of the Brave', which also touches on themes and pieces from this work and 'Mister Heartbreak'. Obviously, parts 2, 3, and 4 will be played in the coming weeks. "This is the language of the on-again off-again future, and it is digital."
26) James-"Sayonara" From the album 'Wah-Wah'.
