35) "The Mid Morning Recording" Mates of State-'Bring It Back'
This album by a husband and wife duo was a surprise, and it almost made it as my favorite album of the year. I like all the previous Mates of State recordings, but I have to say that this is their best album to date. Every song is great, and there could be 4 or 5 singles from this bad boy...at least. They are also one of the best, and funniest live bands I saw all year. I was really surprised at how much sound and noise comes out of two people on stage. They get the sounds pretty close to the album, but it's played live. This lead me to believe that they use very little overdubs in the studio. In the live setting, they are the closest band I've seen to another Ben Folds Five, and they don't even sound anything alike. The have two-part harmonies and keyboards, awesome rhythms and melodies, but that's where the comparisons end. This ended up as my second favorite album of 2006, and you should pick it up if you like great organ sounds and great pop harmonies. Beautiful voices and beautiful sounds.
Michael - MFL
