31) "The Mid-Morning Recording" James Brown-'Live at the Apollo
(1963)'
I was shocked when I heard the news James Brown
had passed away on Christmas morning. MFL had just played "Let's
Make This Christmas Mean Something" on the Christmas show just
two mornings before, and I said on the air during that program, "Life
is good knowing that the Godfather of Soul is out there still kicking
it somewhere". Again, it was strange for me to have said that on
the radio and then have him pass away suddenly, and on Christmas day
no less. He was certainly one of the greatest artists of our time, and
I sadly will never see him perform live. In honor of his great impact
on the music of the 20th century, I decided to go back in his catalog
and find his best live recording. After some research it was discovered
that his best live album was his first album recorded at the famed Apollo
Theater in late October 1962. Not only is this considered one of his
best and most successful albums, it is also considered one of the greatest
live recordings ever made by anyone. I would have to agree, and I would
have to say that it would only be better if you could see him dance.
This is a great album and should we be surprised at how good it really
is. Not really, he was the hardest working man in show business. "Are
you ready for STAR TIME ladies and gentlemen?" Recorded in '62,
but released in early 1963.
