30) The Mid-Morning Recording" The Shamen-'En-Tact' (UK CD Version)
One of my favorite electronic CD's ever recorded. It's quite surprising that it hasn't been played on the show yet. Certainly, for me, it was one of the most played electronic CD's of the 90's. I first saw this band on tour for this album in 1992. This was also the first time I saw Moby play live, as he was the opening act for them. (I also think Mixmaster Morris was the DJ on this tour, but I can't confirm that.) The U.S. version of the CD is pretty different and has some decent mixes, but overall, the severe edits and disjointed mixes don't cut the mustard. Lead singer, Colin Angus seems to like the U.S. version since it has a more diverse collection of mixers and producers. He felt the overall feel of the album was more danceable. That could be the very reason I like the UK version more; it has more atmosphere. The first time I heard the UK version of the album, I felt robbed. I was upset about knowing there was a better version of the album, and I went out to find the import CD. Before the days of eBay, I luckily had a friend working at the local alternative store. He found several copies of the "One Little Indian" UK CD version licensed to a small Czechoslovakian label. Everyone I knew at the time bought one of these CD's for their own enjoyment, and still talk about how good it is today. The versions of "Lightspan", "Evil is Even", "Hear Me (O My People)" are incredible, but the album truly shines during the piece "Hyperreal". It's by far the best version of their best single...and that is saying A LOT! The mixing and production list is still very long on the UK version with William Orbit, Mixmaster Morris, the band Orbital, Paul Oakenfold, Steve Osborne and Graham Massey of 808 State all making appearances. Rapper Mr C, who is sparse, makes his debut on the album version of "Progen (Move Any Mountain)". Colin's best friend Will Sinnott really brought a lot of the darker atmospheres to the group, and his mixing on this recording are top-notch. Will Sin, as he was known, passed away around the release of this album. Even after this tragedy, Colin felt that the central feeling of the group was to "be positive and go on", and he kept the group going strong releasing four more album after this one. I'm sure Heff-Ra would like hearing this one, so this one goes out to him. The album itself is dedicated to the late Will Sin. I think Heffy and Will would have liked each other if they had met. They sure has the same style way back when.
