29) "The Mid-Morning Recording" Mosquitos-'III'
Since it's Cinco de Mayo, I figured I'd play something with a little latino flair. Luckily I grabbed this spectacular fusion jaunt into Brazilian pop-bossa nova. I first heard of this band indirectly through John Peel, but pretty much we crossed their path because they happened to be touring with one of our new favorite bands, Oppenheimer. They went on an eventful tour with them back in October of last year, and we were lucky enough to bring both bands into San Antonio for their first show in the Alamo city, but also our second show in honor of the late great disc jockey John Peel. We wanted someone involved with John Peel to play the shows, and it turned out that Mosquitos guitarist and singer Chris Root had recorded a Peel Session with his previous band A.M. 60. All the pieces seemed to fit into place, and everyone that came to the show was blown away by their sexy and catchy song stylings. I felt lucky to have even seen them play live. They are based out of New York City, but their beautiful lead singer Juju Stulbach was born in Brazil, so there is certainly a worldly sound to the band. A virtual melting pot of sounds and styles. Juju sometimes sings in Spanish, and sometimes in English, but always, her voice glides over the music like an angel. The music can be dark, but it's mostly sunny, light and full of love. They are one of the best live bands I've ever seen, and I can't wait to see them again. They are so colorful, sexy, provocative, and fun. "Texas is huge!!"
