Marcus Rubio-'The Life of Pillows'
Grammy Award winning guitarist Joe Reyes was so
impressed by the lad, that he has given loads of time and effort to
co-producing and performing on two of his albums, and the Irish band
Oppenheimer were so taken by him that he was asked to record some string
arrangements for their second record. He's only eighteen and he's already
turning heads here in Texas and overseas. Tonight we played the third
and, in my opinion, the breakthrough album from San Antonio's own songwriter,
singer, violinist, guitarist, and an all-around humble guy, Marcus Rubio.
Tonight's recording is a brilliant conceptual CD about a boy named Pillows.
Pillows' life seems to be full of music, sweaters, electricity, socks,
girls, boys, and the occasional zombie. Marcus claims him to be his
slightly paranoid alter-ego, and one wonders how many other characters
are lingering inside this young man. An album full of hi-fi and low-fi
sounds mixed up together, and there are so many great songs featured
here. I believe that if this album was released in the UK, at least
four or five singles would have seen the light of day. As of yet, it
hasn't been released in the UK, but only on a limited number of handmade
CD's direct from the artist himself. It's certainly one of our favorite
recordings of 2007, and hopefully someday you too will be lucky enough
to see the wonderful Marcus Rubio perform live. A wonderful way to celebrate
the MFL proclaimed "Year of the Rubio" - 2007. One of the
coolest things I saw all year was a collection of "pilliows"
with art by Mr. Rubio himself. Were you lucky enough to buy one? "With
caffeinated pupils and bloodshot eyes, they stare at me as if hypnotized".
Michael - MFL
