32) "The Mid-Morning Recording" Dawn
of the Replicants-"Bust The Trunk (Singles Compilation)"
Like many great groups that I've
heard over the years, the first time I heard Dawn of the Replicants
was on John Peel's World Service show. During the 90's, before
major access to the internet was obtained, the BBC World Service was
the only access to John Peel's record collection. Sadly it was
only even a thirty-minute program. In the middle of 1997, I heard Peely
play the David Holmes/Tim Goldsworthy remix of a song called "Skullcrusher".
From that first listen I was hooked by the humor and songwriting
of Dawn of the Replicants. I immediately tried to find this release,
but as a lot of Peely's selections, this single was really hard to track
down. It ended up being one of the first things I bought on eBay
way back in late 1998. Dawn of the Replicants are a highly overlooked
and simply underrated band from Scotland, and they deserve your attention.
Some critics have found them, but they have yet to achieve a major
following outside of their homeland. In 2005, while Orly and I
were planning the schedule for SXSW, I saw D.O.T.R. on the list. I knew
I had to see them live and interview them for the show. It turned
out to be their first ever performance in America and I was stunned
that such a great band had never played in the U.S. before. (You
can find MP3's of this concert and our 2005 interview with the band
by clicking here.)
I'm proud that they are friendly supporters of our show. I'm
glad that I've seen them live in concert and talked with such amazing
blues/rock/science fiction loving individuals. John Peel is smiling
somewhere as the twenty-two singles D.O.T.R. released up to 2006 were
played on the radio, and rightly so, their music is sailing out into
the cosmos as we speak. "You may think that I've sold out
but HEY, I'm just checking in, I'm just checking in"
Michael - MFL
