33) "The Mid-Morning Recording" Idlewild-'Hope
is Important'
Take The Smiths and merge them with R.E.M., and
throw in some Pixies, and that might come close to describing the music
heard on this record. This may not be Idlewild's best album, but it
is certainly up there. This was the first music I heard from the band
way back in 1998; I think it was "When I Argue I See Shapes".
Back when these things were new, I found Steve Lamacq's radio show streaming
online, and during that online stream, (one of my first), I heard this
band. This album stupidly never saw the light of day in the U.S., and
it took me a good while before I found out that my friend, (and now
co-host), Orly was also really into the band, and I heard this album
and their next album, '100 Broken Windows' on the same day. That next
album was released in the U.S. after they signed to Capitol Records/EMI
in the states; most likely because they were signed to Food Records/EMI
in the U.K. Unfortunately with that signing, they became another band
in a long list of acts that Capitol Records didn't know how to promote.
Idlewild should have been bigger, and even with this first full-length
recording, their talent is already apparent. There are several great
singles, and the album track "I'm Happy to Be Here Tonight"
should have been a single. It is easily one the strongest tracks in
their whole catalog. I'm glad they still are together, and I hope the
good karma comes to this band. Sort of like what has happened in the
history of bands like The Charlatans, Spiritualized, The Orb and James.
These are all really talented poets, musicians, and artists that haven't
let record labels dictate their creative abilities; all the while standing
in the face of critics and giving them one big musical finger. As the
title of the record says, this band seems full of hope, and that happens
to be really important. "You're an abstract unknown boy, 'cause
you and me talk freely at night....and this is my chaos." "I
am the best message out of the rest of them, are you all alone, are
you all alone?"
