Since Steve Mason just did a remix for Django Django, (played earlier on the show), it got me thinking about what albums we haven't played from The Beta Band. I noticed this one had not been played, so tonight is the night. I should have seen The Beta Band live on the first date of Radiohead's Kid-A tour, but unfortunately they arrived late in the states due to visa problems. They did not join the tour until the next night sadly. I had one more chance a couple of years later at La Zona Rosa in Austin, but I don't remember what kept my stupid ass from next getting there. Maybe I will see Steve Mason perform solo. Speaking of, I think Steve Mason has one of those voices that is just so perfect. It's calming and fitting for these grooves. Orly had the second EP brand new and I first heard that CD on the way to a show in Austin way back when. I remember really liking it. On an ironic note, I dedicate this one out to John Cusack for the scene in the film "High Fildelity" where he gets the whole store to ask, "Who is this?". "It's The Beta Band". I almost fell out of my seat laughing because since I only had heard the second and third EP's, I didn't hear "Dry the Rain" from the first EP until this compilation was released. I too asked, "Who is this?", at the great Hogwild Records here in San Antonio. I too was given the reply, "It's The Beta Band". So infecious. So amazing.
