R.I.P. Scott Hutchison (1981-2018)
This was a pretty tough week for a lot of us in the world of independent music. On May 9th, news spread of the disappearance of Frightened Rabbit founder Scott Hutchison, and soon after on the morning of May 11, 2018, the world received the unfortunate news of his apparent suicide. Orlando and myself had interviewed Scott back in 2008 at SXSW, and we always spoke of the fact that he was one of our top favorite musicians we have ever encountered. One could tell that he was extremely intelligent and multi-talented, but also quite humble about it. He always gave me the impression of a dear soul. Someone who was shy, but also incredibly grateful to the people around him and the talents he had learned. We crossed paths with him a couple more times through the years, and he always spoke fondly of our D.I.Y. but professional ethic here on MFL. It was nice to be appreciated by such a talented individual. His music, and this album in particular, deals with depression and "leaving suicide for another year." Having lost friends to suicide, I can say that it is really hard on the people left behind. The wish that something could have been done to keep them from cutting themselves out of the world, especially when the words have been right in front of everyone for years. We've had a few deaths of major musicians lately, and this one really hit myself and Orlando quite hard because we talked with him on a few occasions, and we will always be grateful to him for the kindness and the appreciation he gave to us. He will be missed, but his life and his music will be shared by the living. Our condolences to his family, his friends who knew him well, and those who knew him through his music.
