29) "The Mid-Morning Recording"        Vangelis-'Best In Space'
Sadly, more and more often these days, the MMR turns into a tribute. On Thursday, the world was made aware of the passing of Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, known as the musician, composer, and producer of some of the greatest scores ever, Vangelis. He changed classical music forever with his use of electronic instruments often in tandem with traditional instruments. A master of the synthesized keyboard, whose music has been heard by many cinema and planetarium patrons alike, for over 50 years. Most likely the first piece I heard by him was the theme to Cosmos, a show I watched as a young child. Then he won the Oscar for his now legendary theme for "Chariots of Fire". Then came Blade Runner. A movie that I didn't see until the early 90's oddly enough with the Director's Cut release of the film. I'm almost glad I didn't see until then because I only had to wait two years for the proper Vangelis soundtrack to to be released in 1994. It was a big deal when it finally did get a release. It's considered one of the greatest movie scores of all-time at this point, and highly influential. Being that I already played the Blade Runner soundtrack as an MMR, I decided to play this CD compliation of his work in the 70's. This compilation is a reworking of a 1981 "Greatest Hits" comp released in the U.S. and Canada. It's is spacey stuff from the 70's and includes some of his more famous themes from that period of his career. One of the greatest ever and he will be missed. "." - Michael - MFL
